Jersey Shore Girl Scout Cookies

One hundred thousand boxes of Girl Scout cookies may seem like a daunting goal. Not for the girls in the Howell-Farmingdale Service Unit. Not only did they achieve it, they are surpassing it! This target may have seemed intimidating at first, but girls' personal goals and support from their leaders and parents motivated the girls to reach this Service Unit goal.

After submitting her Service Unit's initial cookie order, Donna Torich, Service Unit cookie manager, realized they were approximately 3,000 boxes away from breaking the 100,000 cookie box barrier. The Service Unit's leadership team then sent out a challenge. Every girl who sold an additional three cases of cookies - just 36 more boxes - would receive a special patch for participating in the Service Unit's 100,000 Cookie Box Challenge.

"It was the leaders and parents who said yes, went to the depot and picked up the cookies. Most importantly, it was the girls who made the extra phone calls, stood out at booth sales, and actually sold these cookies," said Tornich. "I truly believed they could do it. And, they did!  Some leaders said they sold the cookies at a booth sales, some said each girl took a couple of boxes to sell to their family and friends, and some said they sold the extra cases at booth sales without even realizing it!"

With booth sales at local businesses beginning this Friday, March 5, excitement around all types of Girl Scout cookies is building. Mixed with that excitement however is news from other parts of the country that Little Brownie Bakers is taking back some boxes of Lemon Chalet Crème cookies because of an off smell and taste.

None of the cookies affected were sold by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore.

"Lemon Chalet Crème cookies sold here are safe to eat. There is no quality issue with any of the cookies we received," said Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. "When members of the community begin opening their Girl Scout Cookie boxes this week, they can do so knowing the cookies in each box taste exactly the way they remember from years past."
